stationed in Iraq throw rocks and laugh at a dog suffering from
a severe spinal deformity. One of the soldiers even says,
"That's the funniest thing I've ever seen in my life!" as the
dog yelps in pain and tries to escape on two legs.

Deliberately hurting a suffering animal and then laughing about
it is inexcusably deplorable behavior, especially for American
soldiers. The dog was already suffering before the soldiers
started taunting him, but instead of showing compassion and
seeking to help this poor creature, they completely disregarded
his pain and even threw stones at him because they found it
funny. Abusing a helpless dog for laughs is not funny -- it is
disgusting and shameful, representing the brutal mentality by
which the strong terrorize the weak. It certainly does not
represent the true values that we as a country stand for.

In addition, violence toward animals is often linked to violence
against human beings. Studies by the F.B.I. and U.S. Department
of Justice, among others, have proven the connection between
animal abuse, child abuse and domestic violence. It is possible
that this incident is a sign that these soldiers pose a threat
to the safety of other U.S. soldiers and/or Iraqi citizens or
prisoners. If they are not punished, they may also abuse other
animals, and impressionable viewers all over the world might be
encouraged to hurt animals from watching their video.

The U.S. Army must therefore take the incident captured on this
video very seriously by showing they have a zero tolerance
policy on cruelty to animals. The individuals responsible should
be reprimanded, and receive mandatory sensitivity training to
ensure that they never hurt animals again."
